How to write a good headline

From my long tenancy at the BBC, some things became ingrained. The editorial style was always to be very, very clear about what you are talking about. Fancy headlines and puns are all well and good, but in reality, do they work?

If no one clicks, no one reads.

The heading or title of your blog, article or Press Release is actually the most difficult, and the most important. It should always be done last and sum up in a few words what the article is about.

Imagine this…

You run into a bar. See a friend sat at a table and you tell them your important news. What do you say? How do you say it? It has to be clear, concise and to the point to get their attention. Right?

It’s no different in this information overloaded world, where everyone is time-poor and has a twitchy scroll-up finger.

Those few words, if done well, can drive traffic to your website, improve SEO, increase your followers and cement your place in peoples minds.

So how do you make a headline stand out in a crowded place? You could offer the reader value with titles such as:

And so on…

Key takeaway? Remember the 3 C’s. Keep it clear, concise and clean.
